"An Evening of Inclusion"

Last week members attended a presentation at West Port High School in Ocala.  We have been supporting a peer mentoring program at West Port called Wolf Pack United which was started by an Autism Spectrum Disorder teacher, Norma Barnes. The program is designed to promote inclusion between neurotypical and neurodiverse students.  There were performances by students in the Rock Band and the Chorus.  The featured speaker was Chris Ulmer, teacher, speaker and founder of "Special Books by Special Kids".  Upon his graduation with an MA in teaching with a specialty in Special Ed, Chris began teaching in a special education classroom where he had the idea and the ambition to create a platform for his students' voices to be heard.  He began interviewing his students and videotaping the interview.  During their final year he started a blog.  After six months of blogging he had 100,000 followers and received requests to interview people outside of his classroom.  He now travels the world to interview humans of all diagnoses and backgrounds.  It is his goal to create a more accepting world - one video at a time.  You can google "Special Books by Special Kids". or go to Facebook and enjoy the videos to see what a wonderful, optimistic person he is.
